01 Material

What happens inside the beam

Five lamellas, four glue lines, zero locked-in stress

Each lamella is turned so its growth rings oppose its neighbour’s. The timber wants to move in different directions and cancels itself out. Hence settlement under 1 %, instead of the 8–10 % of a solid log.

02 Production

Six processes
under one roof

Not one stage is subcontracted. Which is why the quality of the beam is answered for not by a supplier but by the same person who signs your contract.

    Felling

    We cut winter timber in Värmland and Dalarna: tight growth rings, minimal resin, consistent density.

  • 02

    Drying

    120 m³ kilns bring the boards to 10–12 % moisture in 12–16 days. Every batch is checked at three points.

  • 03

    Grading

    Strength grading by class. Knots, blue stain and wane are cut out and the sound lengths finger-jointed.

  • 04

    Gluing

    Formaldehyde-free D4 melamine adhesive. A 1.0 MPa press, six hours under load and a delamination test from every shift.

  • 05

    Machining

    The CNC cuts notches, grooves and openings for wiring and ventilation from your working drawings.

  • 06

    Labelling

    Every element gets a number from the assembly drawing. On site there is nothing to work out, only to build.

03 Four questions

The ones you will
ask anyway

We answer them here so the meeting is not spent on them. If doubts remain afterwards, that is a good sign: it means you know your subject. Come and argue.

Site inspection is a separate department reporting to the quality director, not to the site manager. Its bonus depends on the defects it finds, not on houses delivered on time.

  • 320 checklist points against Boverket’s rules: geometry, junctions, fixings, moisture, tolerances
  • Every junction photographed before it is closed up, straight to your account
  • Thermal imaging of the envelope before handover
  • A defects report with deadlines, handed to the client

200 mm of glulam gives about 1.3 m²·°C/W. That is not enough for a Swedish winter, so we size the envelope to Boverket’s requirements instead of selling “warm wood”.

  • 300 mm of roof insulation, 200 mm under the ground floor
  • Triple glazing with warm-edge spacers, Uw down to 0.72
  • Balanced ventilation with 85 % heat recovery
  • Ground-source heat pump, Passive House level on request — payback calculated for your plot

In a glulam house you live inside the material itself, not inside a finish. Which is why what holds it together matters.

  • D4 adhesive, class E1 — no formaldehyde emission, to Svanen indoor-air criteria
  • Fire and biocide treatment free of chlorine and heavy metals
  • FSC chain-of-custody certification for the timber
  • No sheet materials anywhere in the load-bearing envelope

The oldest surviving glulam structures have been working for over a century. We guarantee fifty years, because that is how long we are prepared to service them.

  • 50 years on the structure, clause 8.3 of the contract
  • 3 years on the building services and commissioning
  • Scheduled service visits in the first three years, free
  • Façade maintenance schedule: every 5–7 years

04 Assembly

The shell
in 6–10 weeks

The house kit arrives labelled. A crew of six raises walls, floors and roof with no fitting on site — there is nothing left to cut, the CNC did it all. You see every day of it in the photo report.
